To make this observation is, of course, not new,52 but this fact neither diminishes the importance of the observation nor makes it any less imperative that one state on what basis it is being made. As I see it, the reason the secret of Jesus’ identity is to be understood as a secret about his divine sonship is that Mark more typically associates the twin features of “identity” and “secrecy”
